Tomorrow is 22nd April 2011 and it is Earth Day. Since it was first introduced in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, but only after several years in the planning. This year, Earth Day 2011 is being organized around the theme of A Billion Acts of Green®, which encourages individuals, corporations and non-corporate organizations to “live and act sustainably.”

What does “live and act sustainably” actually mean?
Every year, there’s a theme for earth day and everyone will harp about it and later forget about it.  If everyone only do certain things on Earth day, what about the rest of the days in a year ? Like the theme this year, we are encourage to live our life according to what we pledge on earth day. Not only for 1 day but through out the rest of the year. I have not been writing for the past few months because I am busy. Is that a good excuse, to some it’s not a excuse at all. Earth Day maybe just a day every year that we celebrate our home EARTH but we must keep her in our everyday life and to do all that is neccesary to maintain her well being because if she is SICK, than we are in big trouble.

Everyone can do their part. Some decide to green their area, educate more people about climate change and green economy. That is very good. But most importantly, everyone must do their part. Earthling MUST love EARTH. If you don’t, than everyone is DOOM. I am not trying to hamper or bring gloom and doom but sustaining earth is everyone’s responsibility and not just a few. ” Human are like virus” – a quote from Matrix the movie. I agree with that phrase because we move from place to place, we multiple, use up the resources and move on. If we continue to keep wasting resources and torturing mother Earth, we are in for very serious consequences. Climate change, global warming to name a few. Everyday in the news we hear and read about melting glazier, earthquakes, tsunami etc.

The latest incident in Japan in a very sad. After being strike by a 9.0 earthquake that trigger a massive tsunami, they had to deal with damage nuclear reactors. Yes, everyone said that nuclear power is clean energy. Is it really clean ? Does Japan think it is clean after what happened ? Is having nuclear power so important that we are willing to risk our future generation. The last I read, they are pumping seawater into the reactor and later the seawater are being push back into the ocean. I’m no scientist but I don’t like the idea that radioactive waste(not sure of the term) being thrown into our ocean. Will this effect out ocean ? Fishes, seaweed, food supplies. Some of the radioactive waste are also leaking into the ground. What will be the outcome of all this ?

I live in a country that does not use nuclear power yet. There are talk of building a nuclear power plant. Should we or shouldn’t we ? No doubt, having a nuclear power plant will enable the country to generate more electricity but are we prepare for the backslash ? Yes, many of you will say that, if we built it, it’ll be the latest technology and not like the one in Japan. Mind you, Japan’s was the latest when it was built too. They never forseen that they are gonna be hit by a giant tsunami. What happen in Japan can happen elsewhere. So ask yourself, if what happen in Japan were to happen to you, what than. Prevention is better than cure. Say “NO” to nuclear plant ? Or allow nuclear plant to sprout like mushroom all over earth and pass on this legacy to the next generation, along with mutated fishes, radioactive soil that bear food that feed the farm animals that everyone consume. THINK! Every parent tries to leave something behind for their children. In their will, properties, money, valuable etc. All these things are useless if EARTH that is our HOME is pump with radioactive waste.

” We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors,
we borrow it from our children.”

~ Native Indian proverb

As I mention above I live in a country that does not have a nuclear plant but that does not mean  we do not have radioactive waste. This incident happened before I move to Ipoh and apparently, there are still radioactive waste. “…. Experts visited the Papan dumpsite and declared it unsafe with radiation up to 800 times the accepted level.”  The latest news is there are plan to build a processing plant in Gerbang, near Kuantan(my hometown) that will refine slightly radioactive ore from Australia. Read more here.

As we countdown to EARTH DAY, ponder and think, what have I done to mother earth. Do I want to go down in history as one of the virus that infected mother earth ? Or is it too late to stop the destruction. Will my children’s children curse me for leaving them a home that is not even liveable. You decide.

HAVE A GREEN EARTH DAY.

SAVE OUR
RAINFOREST

I’m sure many of you have heard this plead and cry many times before. To some it’s like a constant nagging and to most just another campaign or whatever that does not affect you. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

The destruction of  the rainforest affects ALL of us. Unless you are not living on this planet or you have a spaceship that can wiz you off somewhere else. Why? you ask. By destroying the rainforest we are actually destroying the habitat of the many species that works together with ecosystem to make mother earth works better for all. In simple word, it prevented flooding and other environmental disaster.

Don’t believe me, turn on the tube and watch the news of all the natural disaster happening around the world. Why should you care? BECAUSE you are living on earth and it’s your HOME, do your part support and demand that all destructive activities be stop and also Temengor Forest is only in our backyard. Belum-Temengor Forest is the largest remaining forest in Peninsular Malaysia. As some of us start our Puasa month, think about all the other gods’ creature that are being put out of their living environment by logging activities and possible conversion to plantation. Don’t all of us deserve a place under the sun ?

To read more go here.

To make a stand and be the CHANGE you want to see in this world, you can donate at least 500 Bonuslink points that will be channeled towards Malaysian Nature Society’s “Save the Temengor Forest” conservation program. To donate go here.

Go sign petition here.

Whatever you decide, it’s in your hand. The future of the rainforest depends on you. I do not wish to one day wake up and only see trees in a museum.

I would like to share with you the lyric of “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put ’em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away the D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard my screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

You can watch the music video of this song performed by Counting Crow at youtube

I’ve my say and I wish and pray that every of you will do your bit to make this world a better place. Have a fantastic day. Go hug a tree today.

It’s the end of the month again. How time flies. And what do you know ? Today is Arbor Day.

What is Arbor Day ? Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. By the 1920s, each state in the United States had passed public laws that stipulated a certain day to be Arbor Day or Arbor and Bird Day observance.

The national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; in Nebraska, it is a civic holiday. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted.

Eventhough Arbor Day is a national day in Nebraska, I think everyone should celebrate Arbor Day. Send everyone of your contact a Arbor Day e-card. We should be treehugging rather than tree chopping. At the home front, there’s Tree planting at Bukit Kinding Resort, Chemor tomorrow (1st May 2010). Check more at Star Ipoh Diary.

HAPPY ARBOR DAY AND HAPPY LABOUR DAY.

Let’s go tree planting and tree hugging.

This year, Earth Day will coincide with the World People’s Conference on Climate Change, to be held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and with the International Year of Biodiversity.

The World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, better known by its Spanish acroynm CMPCC, is a conference organized by the Bolivian government to be held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, April 19-22, 2010. The event will also be webcast online byOneClimate and the Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA). Many believe that the conference is a response to what some termed failed climate talks  in Copenhagen during the United Nations Conference of Parties climate meetings in December 2009.

One of the Cochabamba conference’s stated objectives is to provide an alternative platform for civil society and governments to discuss climate change issues, and specifically to produce proposals for new commitments to the Kyoto Protocol and projects in the lead-up to the next UN climate negotiations scheduled during the COP 16 meeting in Mexico in December 2010.

Other objectives of the conference in Cochabamba include the drafting of a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth, the organization of a People’s World Referendum on Climate Change, and planning the establishment of a Climate Justice Tribunal.

The International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) is a year-long celebration of biological diversity and its value for life on Earth, taking place around the world in 2010. Coinciding with the date of the2010 Biodiversity Target, the year was declared by the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2006.

The International Year of Biodiversity is meant to help raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity through activities and events in many countries.

This means, as well, to influence decision makers, and “to elevate biological diversity nearer to the top of the political agenda.

Whatever the reason, political or not, I believe everyone who calls themselves citizen of  earth should make a pledge to do better for Mother Earth. Small gesture of planting trees might just be a step closer to bringing everyone together. All the talk about climate change and global warming etc etc. At times, many people just cannot understand all this terms and it just turn them off. Earth Day should be a day where everyone should spend with their family or love ones outdoor. Appreciate what mother nature has to offer. Wake up early and watch the sunrise together. Get out of the house, don’t drive or even take a vehicle that consumes petrol. Instead, ride a bicycle or even use your leg to walk. That way you can cut down on your carbon emission for the day. As for me, I’ve decided to go tandeming with my hubby and enjoy Mother Nature. At the rate things are going what with so many earthquakes happening non-stop recently, we both feel that we should spend more time outdoor. cycling and exploring our town and looking up difference species of plants. I’ve been collecting seed of all the medicinal local plants. It’s another one of my hobbies.

The Theme for this year Earth Day is THE GREEN GENERATION. And their core principles are

  • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.
  • An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
  • Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one

No matter where you are on Earth, take a moment to celebrate this day. Lift up your glass and give thanks for Mother Earth. Earth is our only Home. And remember….. There’s no place like HOME.

For those of you who wants to know more regarding climate change, there’s a good article about the latest news of  volcano in Iceland go here.
